Keep an eye out for our teams and solo competitors in next year's race

Gold Coast Anaconda 2008 Race Report

It was a beautiful drive down to the Gold Coast on Saturday, we toured around the course, dropping the bike into its transition area up the Currumbin valley, and checking out the kayak transition areas. No clouds, small surf and offshore winds were ideal.

After we dropped Dmitri into his luxury accommodation for his nanna nap, Simon and Georgie hit the town, succumbing to the bright lights of Surfer's Paradise. A very welcome 8am start saw Dmitri take off on the 1.9km ocean swim in perfect conditions while Georgie and Simon dashed ahead in the car to get the kayak ready. Dmitri had a strong swim, dropping half of the field on the first leg.

Simon was tagged on the beach, paddling on the surf ski, cautiously negotiating Currumbin Alley and heading to Tallebudgera Bar. Simon took out four competitors with some sideways wave catching action which worked out well for ATP accidentally!

The second half of the kayak paddle was up the creek in a huge bow wave made by a large double sea kayak, where Simon sat thankfully, passing a few weary paddlers. A slippy exit over the rocks to tag Dmitri and the start of the 12k trail run.

Dmitri absolutely smashed the technical run and barbed wire fences, coming 11th out of the 178 runners, only 38 seconds behind Guy Andews, last years solo winner! Simon started the bike leg but broke down with a broken rear mech and flat tyre after 7kms. After a lift and jog to the end of the leg, both Dmitri and Simon ran a quick beach run in 9th fastest time to finish in 15th place overall. An excellent race in which ATP hope to enter more teams next year. Thanks to Georgie for the photos and support driving. Click HERE for results page
